Past simple regular verbs
  • You use the past simple to talk about actions/ events that happened in the past.
  • The action/ event is finished. There's no connection with the present.

To make the past simple of a regular verb you add -(e)d.

My mum liked my new swimsuit a lot.
We changed flights in London.

Slide 6 - Slide

Past simple irregular verbs
  • For irregular verbs there is no rule you can follow in the past simple.
  • You need to learn the forms of the verbs.
For example:
  • (to) be = was/ were
  • (to) buy = bought

Past simple: questions
1. Staat er was/were of een hulpww als could/would in de zin?
Was/ were of het hulpww (could/ would) aan het begin van de zin.
- Was your mum in Italy two week ago?
- Were you happy to go back home?
- Could you take photos of the dolphins?

Slide 12 - Slide

Past simple: questions
- Did I bring my bathing costume?
- Did they enjoy their holiday?
- Did she take route 66?

Slide 13 - Slide

3. Met een WH-woord:
Who/what/which/when/where/how zet je dan aan het begin van de zin.

Past simple: Negations

Slide 17 - Slide

Past simple: negations
1. Bij was/were of een hulpww als could/ would voeg je -n't (not) aan het woord.
- She wasn't in Italy.
- Rick and Bo weren't happy to leave France.
- I couldn't see the Mona Lisa in Paris.

Slide 18 - Slide

Past simple: negations
- I didn't bring my sunglasses.
- Lucy didn't like camping.
- We didn't see any dolphins.

Past simple vs Past continuous

We were watching a movie when the phone rang.
He was walking to school when the accident happened.
Past Simple vs Past Continuous

Slide 25 - Slide

and, after....while...
Staat er 'after' of 'and' in de zin, komt er een opeenvolging waar je dezelfde tijd, meestal een past simple, gebruikt:
The tea splashed on the TV and caused a big bang.
After I left school I went to the gym.

My dad was washing the car while my mother was cooking dinner.
