Als iets in het verleden gebeurd is en nu afgelopen is. 
Hoe/vervoeging
Regelmatig werkwoord + –ed 
Onregelmatig werkwoord -> 2e rijtje v/h onreg. ww. (p213-215)
Signaalwoorden
Yesterday, last week, last month, two days ago, four days ago, months ago, a second ago, etc.
Voorbeelden
He walked her home last night.
I talked to him on the phone yesterday.
She tried to close her book but a fly got caught in between the pages.

vragen & ontkenningen.
The past simple eindigt bij bevestigende zinnen vaak op -ed. Naast bevestigende (positive) zinnen kun je ook de past simple gebruiken bij vraagzinnen (?) en ontkenningen (-). Hierbij komt geen -ed achter het ww.

Je vervoegt dus helemaal niks!!!

Bij  was/were of would of hulpwerkwoorden zoals could en would voeg je n't(not) toe.

Onregelmatige werkwoorden
Onregelmatige werkwoorden hebben geen regelmatige uitgang. Bijvoorbeeld: to go → went. Er zijn veel onregelmatige werkwoorden, dus het is belangrijk om ze te leren.
