Pitfalls (valkuilen)

In het Engels zijn er een aantal woorden die vaak door elkaar 
worden gehaald omdat ze hetzelfde klinken maar anders 
worden geschreven. 

                           - To / Too                   - Its / it's 
                           - Than / Then          - Their / There / They're 
                           - Your / You're         - Where / Were / We're 

To / Too:

To = naar          I'm going to a party
      = aan           I gave the present to her. 
      = om te       They were given a book to read. 

Too = te            She's too nice to lie to people. 
         = ook        Peter is coming to the party too. 

Than / Then:

Than = dan    en gebruik je bij vergelijkingen
               Brian is a lot taller than his brother. 
               This dress is smaller than the other one. 

Then = dan / toen    en geeft een tijd aan. 
               We first had lunch and then went to Peter's party. 
                I visited my grandma and then went home. 
   

Your / You're:

Your    =  jouw (bezit)
                 Can I borrow your book? 
                 You need to clean your room today. 

You're =  you are (jij bent)
                  You're late. Where were you? 
                  You're the nicest person I know. 

Its / It's:

Its =   zijn / van het (bezit)
            I parked my bike in its usual place. 
           The cat is drinking its milk. 

It's =  it is (het is)
            It's time to go home. 
            It's my birthday today. 
                    

Their / There / They're:

Their =   hun (bezit)                              They're = they are (zij zijn)
                 Their house is for sale.                          They're always nice. 
                 Are these their books?                          They're never late. 

There =  daar (plaats)
                  Shall we sit over there?
                  I have never been there before.

Where / Were / We're:

Where = waar (plaats)                                  We're = we are (wij zijn)
                  Where were you last night?                   We're best friends.  
                  Where are you going?                              We're so happy!

Were =   was (waren)
                 We were having dinner. 
                 They were always nice to us.
