Nationalism; great love for one's country and believing that it is superior to other countries.

19th century rise of nationalism.

People identify with the group that shares their language, history, culture, religion and traditions.

1870 -1871: War about who was the most powerfull nation

Germany won and called out the German empire in the mirrorroom in Versailles.

France was humiliated and held a grudge ever since.

After the Franco-German war Germany is the strongest nation.

Wilhelm II wanted to be a superpower with colonies and a large fleet. 

The English had the biggest fleet and Germany became a threat to them.

To defend their status England en Germany build up their armies and weapons; arms race

To make their position even stronger they started alliances.
