The elevator - William Sleator
Martin, twelve-years-old, has moved to an apartment building with an old, small elevator. He wants to avoid it, but he lives on the seventeenth floor and doesn’t want to look like a coward. One morning an unusual lady rides the elevator with him, increasing his sense of dread.

De plot is een verhaallijn. 
Een simpele weergave van de plot is: karakter + doel + conflict = plot. 

Neem bijvoorbeeld de film The Lion King. Je karakter (bijvoorbeeld Simba) wil koning worden (doel), maar in de weg staat zijn oom Scar (conflict) en dat is je plot.

Setting
Setting is een term uit de narratologie waarmee aangeduid wordt waar, wanneer en onder welke omstandigheden de gebeurtenissen in een verhaal plaatsvinden. Met de setting wordt dus de achtergrond, het decor, beschreven waartegen het verhaal zich zal afspelen.
