`this is kind of random but the other day I realized that it's practically been 4 years now since the first time the coronavirus was detected in our country and I was wondering about something. How many of you guys have had the virus? And the people that have had it, did you stick to the rules like did you quarantine atleast a week and get tested every now and then. 

If not, would you actually stick to the rules if the virus was deadly to people of your age? Like corona was mostly dangerous for old people with some symptoms for younger people but it wasn't really life threatening to us but what if it was? would you then have taken the rules more seriously? because recently Ive been reading this book which is set in the 17th century and its about a plague which is a virus and it was actually very deadly and it killed lots of people including babies so the story is about how the people have to quarantine

How do you start a presentation? 

For a minute think about the start of a presentation and come up with three different ways that you can start instead of saying 

''my presentation is about.../ hello everybody today I'm going to talk about...''

• Possible answers could be: by asking the audience a question, starting with an anecdote (story), showing a video clip to introduce the topic.

• On the next slide there's a video on how to start a presentation. While watching the video I want you to answer this question: 

In the video the lady mentions that it isn't important to the audience what you are going to talk about because they usually already know. What should you focus on instead?

• So instead of focusing on what we are going to talk about, we should be focusing on.......?
  
•  We should be focusing on why we are going to talk about that topic. 
•  What was according to her a great way to introduce your topic?
•  With a story and by linking that story to your topic.

• The lady in the video gives you 4 steps to follow in order to have a great start to your presentation.

4 steps to an introduction

1. Start with a hook: (hook= iets wat de aandacht trekt) Like a story or a question >Have you ever seen law & order or CSI? ....
2. Transition to topic:what does the hook have to do with your presentation? > ''You might be wondering 'what does this have to do with presentation skills?' well .....''
3. Short introduction of who you are. (in onze geval kan je deze stap overslaan.)
4.  Audience benefit (dus wat is het nut van jouw presentatie voor jouw publiek) ''If you follow this not only will your audience be leaning in wanting to hear more but also.....''

4 steps to a good introduction

My example

It's crazy to think about but it's actually been 4 years already since the coronavirus was first detected in our country. During the first few stages we were asked to quarantine quite a lot regardless of whether we had the virus or not. 

4 steps to an introduction

1. Start with a hook (hook= iets wat de aandacht trekt) 

Like a story or a question > Do you guys also hate going to bed and feeling very cold? ....

2. Transition to topic

So what does the hook have to do with your presentation? > ''I'm asking this because I know I'm not the only one with this struggle. Recently I discovered an amazing product that solved my issue and this product is exactly what I will be introducing to you today.''

3. short introduction of who you are. (in onze geval kan je deze stap overslaan.)

4. Audience benefit (dus wat is het nut van jouw presentatie voor jouw publiek)

''If you want to sleep more comfortably without being scared of paying high electricity bills then  this product is just what you need. .....''

Practice (20 minutes)

- Schrijf nu zelf een korte introductie voor jouw presentatie.

- Gebruik de stappen van de vorige slide. (je hoeft niet met een vraag te beginnen. Mag dus ook een verhaal/ metafoor etc)
- Wees creatief! Jouw doel is om het onderwerp zo interessant mogelijk te introduceren om de aandacht te trekken. 

- schrijf het op in een google drive/ word document om het goed te bewaren en schrijf tenminste 150 woorden. 

- Geen actieve houding/niet bezig zijn met de opdracht> uur inhalen

Blooket

At the end of the year you have to know all 4 pages of the irregular verbs so to remember the words we will practice throughout the weeks with blooket (and other ways).

- Grab your laptop and enter the code. The ones that did not bring their laptop can use the printed exercise. Phones are not allowed. 

Afsluiten 

- Als je introductie niet af is maak je die voor maandag af.

- Daarnaast heb ik een video toegevoegd op magister over hoe je een presentatie kan eindigen. Bedenk thuis op welke manier jij jouw presentatie wilt beëindigen en schrijf jouw stuk voor maandag af. 

- Neem voor de volgende les je laptop mee.
