Why formal (letter) writing?

Most likely, all the writing in English you will do in your future is formal: 
- Essays for your future studies
- Correspondence of a formal nature (application, enquiry, complaint)

All options are correct; the first one is the easiest. Remember to write months with capital letters in English!

(NB: You may also place the date between the two addresses.)

3. Salutation


 Dear Mr. Jones / Mrs. Jones, (if you know who you are writing to)
 Dear Sir/Madam, (if you do not know who you are writing to)

  • Use capital letters
  • Never use a first name.
  • Do not write ‘Mister/Missus’
  • Always end with a comma

4. Three paragraphs*
   

Paragraph 1: Introduction - State the reason of writing your letter.

Paragraph 2: Body - Provide background information. 

Paragraph 3: Conclusion - What do you want to achieve? 

*The content may vary depending on the assignment.

5. Final sentence

This is a sentence you can almost always use. If you want more variation look at the closing lines in your writing booklet.

6. Closure

   Yours sincerely, (when you used a name in the salutation) 
   Yours faithfully, (when you used Sir/Madam in the salutation)

Between each new part of your letter you leave a blank line.

It is okay to start a letter with “I” in English.
