Stones how can we answer?

Stones > English sentences (separate blocks)

Sentences are formed by combining the blocks from left to right. The different rows of words give options to create a good sentence.

What does a good sentences look like?

1. You musn't walk home through that alley at night

2. You shouldn't walk home through that alley at night

These two sentences are examples of correct answers. Writing these sentences on a test will help you score points.

However, make sure you read the Dutch sentence correctly. Words in the Dutch sentence must be in the English one too!

How do we handle translations?

Take a look at this Dutch sentence:

1. Maak je niet teveel zorgen. Het is niet zo erg als dat het lijkt.

And then the Stones:

I can see a couple of key words that will help me decide what to use from the Stones. Namely: 'teveel zorgen', 'zo erg', en 'lijkt'.

They translate well to: 'worry too much', 'as bad'  en 'looks'.

Another example

Take a look at the following sentence:

1. Als laatste moet je te alle tijden wegblijven van de ski lift.

I foresee a couple of problems with this sentence:

1. 'moet je' can be translated to 'you have to', but this isn't in the Stones

2. 'ten alle tijden' is in the middle of the Dutch sentence.

3. The Stones provide two parts: 'stand clear of' and 'stay way from' 

These last two are similar, but not the same. One means 'houdt afstand van' and the other 'blijf weg van'. Make sure you know and recognise the difference. 

How to beat Stones

Step 1: Look at the Dutch sentence

Het is belangrijk te alle tijden te blijven zitten wanneer je opstijgt.

Step 2: Highlight key words

'belangrijk' , 'te alle tijden' , 'blijven zitten' , 'opstijgt' 

Step 3: Translate the words (requires: studying)

'important' , 'at all times' , 'stay seated' , 'take off' 

Step 4: Write your sentence:

It is important to stay seated at all times when taking off.

What about the time?

Lastly, there is one important sentence structure to mention regarding time (and especially the sentence part: 'at all times')

When it is connected to an action (stay seated, remain calm etc.) you must write it after mentioning the action

Therefore: Remain seated at all times when taking off

And not: Remain seated when taking off at all times

- blijf zitten wanneer je opstijgt de hele tijd -

Making sentences

1. Je zou te alle tijden moeten blijven zitten tijdens vertrekt.

2. Steek je handen nooit uit het raam van een trein.

3. Zorg om te beginnen dat je je focust op de snowboarders om je heen.

4. Je moet zeker zijn van de risico's die je neemt.

5. Betreed geen verboden terrein zonder toestemming.

6. Zorg er voor dat je niet strandt als je op safari gaat.

7. Kijk uit dat je niet uitgedroogd raakt tijdens je reis.

8. Je moet je er geen zorgen over maken om een fout te maken

9. Kop op. Het is niet zo'n probleem.
