What are modal verbs?

Definition modal verbs

An auxiliary verb that expresses necessity or possibility. English modal verbs include must, shall, will, should, would, can, could, may, and might.

1. may / might om toestemming te vragen of zeggen dat iets niet is toegestaan. 'may' is mogen en 'might' is zouden (mogen).

                                                                                                You may go to the bathroom. 

                                                                                                 Might I go to the bathroom?

2. I + might is een optie afwegen 

                                                                                                I might do the dishes tonight.

3. might is also used to give advice

                                                                                                studying for the test earlier.

Ought to

1. ought to geeft aan dat iets moet / beter zou zijn. ought to = zou moeten

I ought to go to the gym more often. 

You ought to clean up your room. 

Negations

Place not or n't after the modal / after the form of to be (in the case of to be able to)

You may not go home early. (used seperately)

You shouldn't have yelled at your best friend. (negation is combined)

I wasn't able to come to your wedding.

ought to is not used in negations. Use should instead.

1. Translate stone 7 before Tuesday. Make sure you can show it in class!
