The wind blows all the way from Florida (USA) to the west coast of France. What name do we use for this distance?
Slide 5 - Open question
Erosion
Transportation
Deposition
A. This is how waves wear away the coast. The more energy the waves have and the softer the rock, the faster this will be.
B. This process carries eroded material out to sea, or along the beach – by longshore drift.
C. This process occurs when waves do not have enough energy to transport the eroded material – so it is left behind, forming a beach.
F. Beaches help to absorb the energy of the waves, which slows down this process, protecting the coastline.
Slide 6 - Drag question
Abrasion
Solution
Attrition
Hydraulic action
Chemicals in the rock are dissolved by weak acids in the sea water
Sand and pebbles in the waves are flung onto the rock, wearing it away like sandpaper
The energy of the waves forces air and water into the cracks in the rocks, weakening them and eventually breaking them up
The movement of the waves cause the eroded pieces of rock to collide into each other, causing them to become smaller and smaller, until they end up as shingle or sand.
Slide 7 - Drag question
Which landform do you see here?
Slide 8 - Open question
How is a wave-cut platform formed?
A
The cliff is eroded away, the base stayed behind
B
It formed after softer rock was eroded and deposited again
C
The longshore drift brought rocks and sand to this shallow bay
D
Abrasion and attrition caused the cliff to be eroded. The eroded material formed the platform.
