English term 3: lesson 2

Small talk is polite conversation about unimportant things, like the weather, sports or what you did last weekend. It’s a good way to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Making small talk is a great way to break the ice when you’re talking to someone you don’t know well. You can also make small talk in many other situations, for example at a party or with colleagues at a work meeting.

Small talk often begins with a question or statement. For example:
Wow, it’s really cold for this time of year, right?
Do you have any plans for the weekend?
How was your holiday?
I just love your coat!
What did you think of last night’s match?
When you make small talk, pick a neutral topic. Don’t discuss topics like personal problems or political issues.
