Slide 2 - Slide

Formulate a research question

1. Always one question
2. A question that can not be answered with 'yes' or 'no'

Examples of research questions

Why...
1. Are banana's bent?
2. Do people go to bed in the night?
3. Do people go on holidays more in the summer period?

Slide 3 - Slide

Put your hands in the air...
What's a good research question?
1. Do plants grow better with or without fertilizer (mest) and how does light influence the growth?
2. Does compost affect the growth of cress plants?
3. How does adding fertilizer affect the growth of cress plants?
*cress = tuinkers, fertilizer = mest

Slide 4 - Slide

 Hypothesis

Hypothesis: What do you expect the answer to your research question will be?

"If .... (fertilizer is added to cress plants)  then... (the plants will grow two times faster) "

Slide 5 - Slide

2. Make a workplan
How can I get the answer to my research question?
- By viewing or counting something
- By doing an experiment (lab-activity)

Think about....
Method
List of supplies

Slide 6 - Slide

Which method are you using to answer these 'research questions' ?
1. Which type of food does my cat prefer?
2. How many students at school have asthma?
3. How many bears are living in 'the Oost-vaders Plassen?'

Slide 7 - Slide

Taking a sample
1. How many students at school have asthma?
2. How many bears are living in 'The Oost-Vaders Plassen?'

The numbers might be too much to count...
You carry out a part of the total number and to do an investigation

Slide 8 - Slide

Workplan
  Quadrat (proefvlak)

A small part of a meadow= grasvlak
 Sample (steekproef)

Bijv.
Totaal: 1500 op school
Sample: 150 mensen neem je
15 van 150 mensen met asthma (10%)
Er zijn 10x meer mensen dan de sample, dus... 15x10= 150 mensen met asthma

Slide 9 - Slide

3. Collect and process results
The results of an investigation observations, counts and measurements

  1. You can put the results in .... DIAGRAMS!!!
  2. -Line Chart -Bar Chart -Pie Chart -Tally marks

Slide 10 - Slide

1. Line chart --> How does something increase/decrease?

Slide 11 - Slide

2. Bar Chart --> Numbers

Slide 12 - Slide

3. Pie chart --> percentages %. Pay attention to the legend

Slide 13 - Slide

Tally chart --> Counting

Slide 14 - Slide

4. Draw a Conclusion

Does my experiment answer the research question? What can I make out of this?

Slide 15 - Slide

Homework, finished? = no homework
1.3 Exersices:
1, 3, 4, 5, 7 till 13 (exept from 14), 16 till 19a
