Wat zijn valkuilen?

Valkuilen zijn veelvoorkomende fouten die gemaakt worden bij het begrijpen van teksten.

Welke fouten maak jij vaak bij lezen van Engelse teksten en beantwoorden van vragen hierover?

Valkuil 1: Te veel uit de tekst

Foute antwoorden bevatten informatie die wel in de tekst staat, maar niet relevant is voor de vraag.

Q: Why did Pete leave the house, according to paragraph 1?

A: Pete left the house because he was afraid,
he also wanted to spend some time with his mom.

Het laatste staat in alinea 2 en niet in alinea 1!

Valkuil 2: Te weinig uit de tekst

Foute antwoorden missen belangrijke informatie uit de tekst, waardoor het antwoord onvolledig is.

Q: Give two reasons why the dog barked?
A: The dog barked because there was a burglar.
Dit is maar één reden! In de tekst staat:
The dog barked because it saw someone break into the house and it heard a lot of noise.

Valkuil 3: Bijzaak

Foute antwoorden bevatten details die niet relevant zijn voor de hoofdvraag, maar wel in de tekst voorkomen.
Q: What does par. 2 tell you about Simon's behavior?
A: Simon drove at high speed through the center of the city.
Dit is een voorbeeld. In de tekst staat: Simon did 

a lot of irresponsible things.

Valkuil 4: Past niet bij de vraag

Foute antwoorden staan wel in de tekst, maar passen niet specifiek bij de gestelde vraag.

Q: Explain why the people in par. 4 left their country?
A: People liked the weather in their own country better.

Dit is juist waarom ze hun land niet willlen verlaten!

Valkuil 5: Tegenovergestelde

Foute antwoorden geven het tegenovergestelde van wat in de tekst staat als antwoord.

Q: When can you use the Oyster Card?
A: You can only use the card during weekdays.

In de tekst staat: The Oyster Card is only

valid during the weekends.

Valkuil 6: Open deur

Foute antwoorden lijken voor de hand liggend, maar worden niet ondersteund door de tekst.

Q: What is said about men and women in par. 5?
A: Men and women are equal in learning foreign languages.
In de tekst staat: Women have a better ability to learn languages than men.

Valkuil 7: Te veel erbij gesleept

Foute antwoorden bevatten zelf verzonnen informatie die niet direct uit de tekst komt.

Q: What did Shakespeare like to do as a child?
A: He liked writing much better than painting.
Dat wordt niet gevraagd. In de tekst staat hier ook niets over. Er staat alleen: Shakespeare liked to write and paint as a child.
