It began in Rome in the year 268. The Emporor Claudius wanted an enormous army and did not want these soldiers to marry. He created a law where young soldiers could not marry.

The Priest Valentine
He thought this was absurd and disobeyed the law! He secretly married many young soldiers and women.
While he did that, he put his life in danger. And in the end he was caught! He was sentenced to death.

His legacy
Priest Valentine was sentenced to death on 14 February 270. Centuries later, the Catholic Church made that kindly priest a saint, one of three saints named “Valentine.”
