City life

Nobles had no real power in cities.

• The difference with the manor was huge.
• People were free in the cities.

City life

The people who lived in the city were called burghers.

Some of these burghers could become very rich!

1. Merchants and Guild Masters.                            
2. Craftsmen and shopkeepers.                                                           
3. Common workers and beggars.

• Serfs often fled from the manor.

• After a year of not being captured by the lord, a serf would become a burgher.
