Key Terms
Chattel Slavery: the enslaving and owning of human beings and their offspring as property, able to be bought, sold, and forced to work without wages, as distinguished from other systems of forced, unpaid, or low-wage labor also considered to be slavery.
indentured servant:  a person who agrees to provide five to seven years of unpaid labor in return for free passage across the ocean, food, clothing and shelter
middle passage: the voyage of slaves from Africa to America in which many suffered and died
cash crop: a product grown for sale and not for the farmer's own use

  • was established in 1633 by George Calvert and his son Cecilius Calvert.
  • In contrast to the other southern colonies, was created as a safe haven for catholics

  • Started out as 1 colony
  • was inhabited by indigenous people, former indentured servants and farmers from Barbados
  •  Initially intended to grow silk, however efforts failed.
  • This led to the creation of 2 separate colonies in 1712
