Significance of cities

R.

Slide 5 - Slide

City rights
  • Cities started paying taxes in exchange for privileges.
  • Special rights: markets, city wall, etc.
  • Sometimes they received a city charter: special contract with city rights.
  • This meant self-governance.
R.

Self-government

  • City people: not serfs anymore. They were free.
  • If you were in the city for 1 year and 1 day, you could become burghers.
  • There were loads of differences between burghers.
Burghers = burgers.
