When dividing the world into rich and poor countries you can look at development characteristics:

  1. GNP per head of the population
  2. Basic neccesities

An important indicator (sign) is the GNP per head of the population. 
What do you notice?

You should also look at the living conditions of the population. This has to do with the four basic necessities. (G230)

  1. Food
  2. shelter
  3. education
  4. healthcare

There are other characteristics of development.
 In poor countries, the population grows more quickly and more people work in agriculture. Also, the percentage of people living in cities grows quickly because of urbanization.

Example: 
Argriculture in the Netherlands: 2,1% of the working population
Agriculture in Nigeria:  Almost 20% of the working population
Argiculture in Etiopia: 70% of the working population
