The present continuous (PC) = De duurvorm van de tegenwoordige tijd

In het Engels zijn er woordjes (signaalwoorden) waarmee je herkent dat het om het NU gaat. Kijk bijvoorbeeld naar de volgende zinnen. De present continuous is schuingedrukt en de signaalwoorden zijn dikgedrukt:

I am reading the newspaper right now.

He is laughing at me at the moment.

Do your hear that as well? She is waking up!

Cynthia is currently cycling to school.

Hoe maak je de present continuous?

Om de present continuous te maken heb je altijd 2 werkwoorden nodig. Namelijk een vervoeging van to be + werkwoord met -ing erachter.

Exception 1 (uitzondering)

Werkwoorden die eindigen op een -e:

1. to have: He is having dinner.

2. to give: Our father is giving us many compliments.

--> de -e verdwijnt en je plakt -ing erachter.

Exception 2 

Werkwoorden die eindigen op -c:

1. to panic: She is panicking.

--> krijgen een k erbij voor -ing.

Exception 3

Bij korte werkwoorden, die één klinker hebben:

1. to swap: They are swapping their Ipods, while they are listening each others music.

2. to cut: The barber is cutting her hair.

3. to stop: Look! The police is stopping that criminal.

--> je verdubbelt de medeklinkers voor -ing.

Exception 4

Let op, dit geldt niet voor werkwoorden die eindigen op één klinker en een -y.

1. We are playing some nice games.

2. She is enjoying the sunny day.

3. They are buying new clothes.

--> je gebruikt gewoon het werkwoord en plakt er -ing achter. 

Exception 5

Werkwoorden die eindigen op een l, met één klinker ervoor:

- to travel: Mark is travelling to Canada as we speak.

--> je verdubbelt de l.
