Asking questions about the past (finished)
For "be":

Subject <----> was/were

"I was sleepy" ------> "Was I sleepy?"

Did + subject + verb
(verb not in the past form!!!)

"Did you walk home yesterday?"
(time words usually at the end)

Do you want to know specifics in a question?
Question words come first
(the "Wh" words and "How")

"When did you walk home yesterday?"
"Who did I hit with my car?"

Make a past simple question:
"I ate a sandwich this morning."

Past actions with a longer duration

(Question word +) was/were + subject + verb(-ing)

"Was he walking that fast?"
"When were you planning on telling me?"
"What was he doing when he broke his leg?"

"What" or "Who" can also be the subject.
Then:

What/Who + was/were + verb(-ing)

"What was making that noise last night?"

"He was painting when the lights went out."

To deny something was happening in a past period of time

Subject + was/were + not + verb(-ing)
(So just insert "not" after was/were)

"I was not shaking the ladder when he fell"
"They were not running on the slippery floor"

Never use with past continuous, since it describes a state, not an action. Only use past simple.
