During the testweek we will be writing either a five paragraph essay. In this lesson we will be focussing on the five paragraph essay. It is the form that we have been using over the last few years, so nothing should come as a surprise to you.

Introduction
Hook: the opening of your essay, which draws the reader in.
Trailer: the part where the reader gets a foretaste of what your essay is going to be about.
Thesis: most important line, it tells the reader what your point of view is and you will spend the rest of the essay defending it

Body paragraphs
Topic: present your argument in an assertive way
Argument: a fact or fair assumption, used to support your thesis
Example: to liven up the reading experience
Conclusion: wraps up the paragraph

Order of the arguments
Order should be : 2 - 3 - 1, where 1 is the strongest argument and 3 the weakest

Conclusion
In the conclusion you rephrase the thesis statement, made stronger by the arguments that you have given in the body paragraphs.

Writing an ending
- Don't use completely new information
- Should still be natural
- Surprise yourself and (more importantly) your reader
Do not make the surprise: ........ and then he woke up.
This is so much a cliche that you will bore the reader (certainly me)
