                   = 5x + 17 + 5x + 17

                   = 5x + 5x + 17 + 17 = 10x + 34

                        = 2x + x - 9 - 10   = 3x - 19

  Given c = 5x + 17 and d = 10 + 2x, find 3d.

              3d = d + d + d  

                   = 10 + 2x + 10 + 2x + 10 + 2x

                   = 2x + 2x + 2x + 10 + 10 + 10 = 6x + 30

                        = 2x + x - 9 - 10   = 3x - 19

Exercise

  Given c = 5x + 17 and d = 10 + 2x, find c + d.

               c + d = 5x + 17 + 10 + 2x

                         = 5x + 2x + 17 + 10   

                         = 7x + 27

Exercise

  Given c = 5x + 17 and d = 10 + 2x, find 2c + d.

               2c + d = 10x + 34 + 10 + 2x

                         = 10x + 2x + 34 + 10   

                         = 12x + 44

Exercise

  Given c = 5x + 17 and d = 10 + 2x, find 2c + 3d.

               2c + 3d = 10x + 34 + 30 + 6x

                         = 10x + 6x + 34 + 30   

                         = 16x + 64
