When to use it:
-use when the noun or adjective that comes next begins with a consonant sound. (A blue book, a union)

-use when the noun or adjective that comes next begins with a vowel sound. (An old bike, an onion) 

A/An are used to describe one of many.

-  beliefs:

Definite Article:  THE
When to use it:
-use to refer to specific or particular nouns (when it's the only one)
(the book over there)
(John is the Principal of Junior High.)
(Bruls is the mayor of Nijmegen.)

- musical instruments:
He plays the guitar.
They play the piano.



-use when you refer to something that's previously mentioned
(There are a lot of people in this restaurant, the people that come here...)
- use when you refer to a historical period, a specific group, an ordinal number or a superlative adjective. 
(The Renaissance/ the Russian communists/ the 10th/ the best teacher in the world)

Zero Article:





When:
- talking about things in general (Homework gives me stress.)
BUT: The homework for English for tomorrow is easy.

- you refer to countries, continents or cities (France, Europe, New York)
Note: Except for The Netherlands, The U.S. and The U.K.
