What is the past continuous?

Past = verleden

Continuous = duurvorm

Iets heeft in het verleden plaatsgevonden voor een langere tijd (het was aan de gang)

She was talking to the teacher

They were reading a book in the library

When do you use the past continuous?

Je gebruikt de past continuous als iets in het verleden een tijdje aan de gang was.

My neighbours were shouting at each other

When do you use the past continuous?

Soms worden de past simple en de past continuous beide in één zin gebruikt, er is dan iets wat gebeurde terwijl er al iets aan de gang was. De lange gebeurtenis staat dan in de past continuous, de korte in de past simple.

I was taking a bath when the doorbell rang

My brother was cycling home when he saw my friend

The form

Er zijn 3 stappen:

1. Was/were
2. Hele ww

3. +ing (achter het hele ww)

Indy was watching a movie

They were listening to music

Past continuous

Verleden tijd, lange actie

Onderbroken acties en acties die tegelijk lopen met elkaar

was/were + ww + ing

I was sleeping, I did not hear you come in.

Past simple

Verleden tijd, korte actie

Feiten, gewoonten en regelmatigheden

ww + ed (tenzij onregelmatig)

When I was in high school, I walked  to school every day.

Word cards

Write on the given cards, random words.

Think of things or animals. 

Each student will have four word cards (2x2)

Create a sentence for a pair of words—one word for the past tense clause and one for the past continuous clause. 

For example, they draw the two words, drive and monkey. A possible sentence could be: I was driving down the street when I saw a monkey in the road.
