First Estate = The Clergy
They owned 10% of the land while they were 1% of the population
They could tax people but did not pay taxes themselves
Second Estate = The Nobles
They owned 20% of the land while they were 1,5% of the population
They paid hardly any tax
They held important jobs in church / government / army

Ancien regime = the rule of the French kings in the 18th century
Estates = medieval layers of society (3 Estates)
Bourgeoisie = rich citizens in the cities
Estates general = a meeting of the three Estates
National Assembly = parliament
Reactionaries = people who said the changes had gone far enough
Radicals = people who want even more changes

Rulers were back on the throne in most countries
BUT:
Some changes, such as the Code Napoléon stayed
Most countries had now parliaments that made the king less powerful!
