My brother is eating an apple = actief want mijn broer doe iets actief.

The big red apple is being eaten by my brother: passief want de appel wordt gegeten en doet zelf niets.

Kort gezegd is de passief een manier om uit te drukken wie of wat iets ondergaat of ervaart in plaats van iets actief te doen.

Herkennen van de passief

Soms weet je niet goed of je te maken hebt met een actieve of een passieve zin. De makkelijkste regel om dit na te gaan is kijken of het onderwerp iets doet of niet.

Het onderwerp doet iets actief: actieve zin

Het onderwerp ondergaat iets: passieve zin
