Past perfect
- Completed in the past, before something else happened
= Had + past participle
(ed/3e rij)

- When he had finished studying, he went home
 (alle twee al afgerond).


Past perfect continuous

- Completed in the past, took some time. Focus on duration.
= Had + been + present participle
(+ing)

- He had been studying English for six years, after he had finished his thesis he moved to Portugal to teach. 
(wel zes jaar lang, nu niet meer).
