Om een tekst beter te kunnen begrijpen, kun je letten op signaalwoorden. Signaalwoorden geven verbanden tussen onderdelen van een tekst aan. 
Met signaalwoorden kun je ook vaak bepalen wat het doel van de schrijver is:
een voorbeeld geven: for example, such as, like
extra informatie geven: also, moreover, on top of that, besides, and, what’s more, furthermore
iets tegenspreken: however, but, instead, although, except
een reden geven: that’s why, because, obviously
een voorwaarde geven: if, whether, unless
een volgorde aangeven: first, secondly, finally
een conclusie trekken: so, therefore
