What do you remember about the past continuous?

When do we use the past continuous?

• The past continuous is used to describe that something was going on for a while.

• The past continuous is used to describe that something was happening at a precise time in the past.

Past continuous: How do we form it?

• Past form of 'to be' + -ing.
• Two verbs are needed to form the past continuous.

A few examples:

Regular:                                    Negative:

• I was working.                 I was not working.    

Question:                                  Past continuous + past simple:

• Was he cooking?            When he phoned, I was watching TV. 

How can we recognise the past continuous?

1. There are always two verbs.
2. There are one or two verbs.

What about signal words?

Past simple and continuous in one sentence

Past simple:

• interruption or event that was already completed in the past.

Past continuous:

• The event that was going on for a while or was happening at a precise time in the past.
