Slide 5 - Open question

Slide 6 - Mind map

Making questions 2.1

There are two ways to form a question in the present simple.

Rule 1: With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you place the verb at the beginning of the sentence.

Examples:

Are you our teacher miss Kouwenhoven?

Can you tell me what is the time?

May I go to the toilet?

Slide 7 - Slide

Making questions 2.2

Rule 2: With any other (main) verb, you add an extra verb to the beginning of the sentence: to do (do or does). The main verb changes to the infinitive (base form).
do/does + subject + infinitive (main verb)
Example:

Do you like swimming?

Does he want to play the piano?

Do they do their homework?

Slide 8 - Slide

Yes/No Questions
Does the sentence have one of these verbs: to be/ can/ will/ may

     No                                                                           Yes

Put do/does in front of the sentence                       Put one of these verbs at the                                                                                                  beginning of the sentence

Slide 9 - Slide

Negative (1)
You place to do + not after the subject.

You put infinitive form of the (main) verb after to do + not.
to do + not + infinitive (main verb)

You use do not or the short form don't with I, you, we and they. You use does not or the short form doesn't with he, she and it.
Example:
I do not create a ship.

He doesn't do his homework.

They don't listen to miss Watts.

Slide 10 - Slide

What about may can be and will?

With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you add the word not after the verb.

Note! Can + not is written as one word: cannot. Is not, are not and cannot can be shortened to isn't, aren't and can't. The short form of will not is won't.

Examples:

1. Jackson will not go to school  tomorrow.

2. You cannot write this to mister van Geest!

3. She isn't here yet.

Slide 11 - Slide

Negative sentences
Does the sentence have one of these verbs: To be/ can/ may/ will?

                         No                                                                                                Yes

Put do/does + not                                                         Use the same verb + not
              before the verb
