When we arrived he was having a bath.

When the fire started I was watching television.

When does one past continuous?

Something was going on in the past-> then something else happened in the past

Example: Caronline was skiing when she broke her leg

Something was going on for a while in the past 

She was doing homework for hours yesterday evening 

How does one past continuous?

Was/were + verb-ing 

• I was teaching when someone named the plant
• He was calling his grandpa when I fell down the 

stairs

• They were cleaning the classroom when the

lights went off
