Welcome to biology!

Today, we will discuss the kingdom of plants

First, we will go into what a plant looks like, and later on we will discuss different types of plants that exist.

Structure of plants

Different parts of a plant:

• Root
• Stem
• Leaf
• Flower

Root

• First part to grow
• Anchor the plant in the soil
• Take up water and minerals

Stem

• Second part to grow
• Holds the plant upright
• Sends water and minerals to rest of the plant
• Provides height

Leaf

• Make energy via photosynthesis

Flower

• Reproduce by producing seeds and fruits
• Many ways of attracting pollinators (colour, smell, sugar)

Many types of plants exist!

• Mosses and liverworts
• Ferns
• Gymnosperms
• Angiosperms

Mosses and liverworts

• Simple leaves
• No stems or roots
• Spore capsules

Ferns

• Leaves, roots and stems
• Make spores inside sporangia

Gymnosperms

• Seeds develop in cones
• Leaves are needle-shaped
• Often live in cold, dry areas

Angiosperms

• Flowering plants
• Sperm cells contained in pollen
• Pollinated by insects, wind and other animals
• Fertilized eggs = seeds, sometimes in fruit

Now go outside!

• Your next assignment is to go outside and find the four types of plants: mosses, ferns, gymnosperms and angiosperms
• Take a picture of each and upload these pictures to ItsLearning again!
