Did you know?
In 1948, the South African government made new laws to keep the white and black people apart. This system was called 'apartheid'.
 
Nelson Mandela, a politician, fought against this system and spent 27 years in prison as a result. 
A few years after he was released, he became the first black President of South Africa. After his death he is still seen as a hero and is mostly remembered for bringing people together to live in peace.

Did you know?
There are a lot of cities with Dutch names in South Africa. 17th-century Dutch colonists spoke the language which later became Afrikaans, a language with Dutch-sounding words. 

There are 11 official languages in South Africa.
