Modal verbs
Are a special kind of verb.
Example of modal verbs:
Can/could/should/to have to and must

Today we are going to look at the following modal verbs:
Can
to be able to
could
negatives

You use the modal verb can for the following things:
To make a request
To ask for (or give) permission
To talk about possibilities and abilities
Examples:
1. Can you pass the salt?
2. if he's not feeling well, he can take the day off
To be able to
ONLY USED TO TALK ABOUT SOMEONE'S POSSIBILITY OR ABILITIES
Examples:
Luckily, I was able to help him.

Could is the past tense of can.
You can also use could for the following things:
to ask a question in a more formal or polite way
to talk about the possibility that something will happen in the future.
Examples:
I could already count when I was two years old.
