SOME & ANY

Meaning: een paar, een beetje, enkele

When do we use some and when do we use any?

SOME • when to use it? 

1. Positive sentences

   We bought some flowers

2. With a question if you think the answer will be yes.

   Can I have some water please?

3. When offering or requesting something.

   Would you like some tea?

   

    

 

ANY • when to use it?

1. In negative sentences

2. With questions  - when the answer isn't known yet.

We didn't buy any flowers.

They arrived without any delay.

ANY • when to use it?

1. In negative sentences

2. For questions for which the answer isn't certain yet

ANY 

We use some with: 

- positive sentences

- Questions where you expect the answer to the question to be ''yes''.

- with an offer or request

We use some with: 

- Negative sentences

- All the other types of questions.

- Look for words like:

without, hardly, never
