William of Orange
  • 1533-1584.
  • He worked for the king as a stadtholder.
  • He knew king Philip II well.
  • He thought that people should have to choose for themself what to believe.
  • He fled to Germany, but attacked the duke of Alva in 1568 after his Dutch possessions were taken away.

  • This attack started the Dutch Revolt.
  • The revolt was not very succesfull in the beginning.
  • That changed after 1572.
  • The Geuzen captured Den Briel.
  • After this city, more cities showed support for the Dutch Revolt including Amsterdam.

  • July 26th 1581 the Act of Abjuration was signed.
  • The States General didn't want Philip II as a king anymore.
  • They argued that a king should take care of his people, and not treat them badly.

  • William of Orange was declared an outlaw by Philip II.
  •  William of Orange was killed by the catholic Balthasar Gerards in july 1584.
  • This was not the end of the Dutch Revolt
  • The Northern provinces declared the Dutch Republic in 1588. 
  • We had no king anymore.
  • In 1648 the Treaty of Munster was signed. The war with Spain was over.
