Grammar explanation
The next slides contain the explanation and some examples of the following grammatical features:
past simple vs. past continuous
had better / would rather / should
-ing vorm
You need this information for the exercises in the workbook
Slide 8 - Slide
Grammar:past simple vs. past continuous (Helpdesk A6)
You use the past simple when you want to talk about when something happened. (Vertellen wanneer iets gebeurde. Vaak een tijdsbepaling.)
Mum rang from home an hour ago. / I bought my nintendo switch a year ago. / She walked to school yesterday.
You use the past continuous when you want to talk about something that was going on when something happened. (Vertellen wat er aan de gang was toen iets gebeurde).
I was talking on the phone when my brother walked into the room. / They were watching tv when the power went out.

Grammar: had better / would rather /should (Helpdesk B4 + B5)
had better + hele werkwoord = 'kon maar beter'
You'd better not lie to your close friends.
would rather + hele werkwoord = 'zou liever'
She would rather not talk about it, if you don't mind.
should + hele werkwoord = 'zou (eigenlijk) moeten'
You don't have to tell me what I should do, I already know.
Slide 10 - Slide
Grammar: -ing vorm (Helpdesk B13)
You use this after the verbs love, like, hate, stop, start, begin:
He loves playing videogames. / I hate flying. / She stopped listening to you. / We like going to the movies.
You can also use the -ing vorm at the start of a sentence:
Cycling to school is not my favourite thing to do. / Running a marathon cannot be easy. / Shoplifting is a common crime.
Or after a preposition (na een voorzetsel):
I'm not good at playing soccer. / They are sorry for ruining the party.
