Passive Voice
What is a passive sentence?

A passive sentence is a sentence in which the subject does not perform the action of the verb. In fact, in a passive sentence, the action of the verb is done to the subject. For example:

My mom feeds the cat

The cat is fed by my mom

Which one is passive and which one is active?

Passive Voice
Why should you use the passive voice?

1. You don't want to say who or what did the action
The bank was robed (you know who did it, but you don't want to say who did it)

2. You don't know who did the action
The chair is broken (but you don't know who broke it)

3. The object is the most important part of the sentence, or the most interesting
The passive voice is frequently used by English speakers (Information about the passive voice is more important than knowing English speakers use it)

You can use the passive voice to change the focus of your sentence!

Slide 9 - Slide

1. You don't want to say who or what did the action
Why? Maybe you're trying to avoid responsibility for something you did.
Or maybe you don't want to get your mate into trouble

2. You don't know who did the action

3. the object is the most important part of the sentence or the most interesting
(the object is the thing which the action is happening to, not the thing that is doing the action.

you can use the passive to change the focus of your sentence

Passive Voice
How can you see if a sentence is passive?

A Past and Present Passive uses:

  • a form of to be (in the past or present; am, is, are; were/was )
  • A past participle (what is a past participle again?)
  • by (optional; to express who has done the action)

    Example:

The cake is eaten (by the children) - (present tense)
The cake was eaten (by the children) - (past tense)

How to make the Past Passive and Present Passive

Step 1: Switch the subject and the object
Step 2: Look at the verb, is the verb in the past tense or the present tense? (the tense
of the active verb determines the tense form of the "to be" form in step 3
Step 3: Use a form of to be + past participle
Step 4: use the preposition by to say who or what does the action, but only if this is important

My mom (subject) / feeds (verb: present tense) / the cat (object)
1. The cat feeds my mom
2. The cat is fed my mom
3. The cat is fed by my mom
