TAG QUESTIONS WITH TO BE
Een tag question is een korte vraag aan het einde van een zin. We vragen hiermee of iets wat we zeggen klopt of niet.

In het Nederlands zeggen we dan vaak “toch?”, “hè”, “is het niet?”, of “of wel?”

Bij het maken van een tag question moeten we eerst bepalen of de zin bevestigend (+) of ontkennend (-) is. 
  • I am not a bad friend, am I?
  • I’m a fast runner, aren’t I?
  • You’re not a very good football player, are you?
  • You are her younger sister, aren’t you?
  • He isn’t very funny, is he?
  • Susan is her sister, isn’t she?
  • We are not that close, are we?
  • Pete and Jane are good friends, aren’t they?

Wat valt op?

Als de hoofdzin negatief is, is de tag question positief. We maken dan gebruik van één van de volgende vormen:

  • Am I?
  • Are you?
  • Is he? / is she? / is it?
  • Are we?
  • Are they?

Wat valt op?

Als de hoofdzin positief is, is de tag question negatief. We maken dan gebruik van één van de volgende vormen:

  • Aren’t I? 
  • Aren’t you?
  • Isn’t he? / isn’t she? / isn’t it?
  • Aren’t we?
  • Aren’t they?

Wat valt op?

We gebruiken afwijkende vormen voor de ik-persoon.


  • I am not qualified for this, am I?
  • I'm a nice guy, aren’t I?

We maken bij tag questions nooit gebruik van namen, alleen pronouns.

  • Baseball is a very popular sport, isn't it?
  • He is not very nice, is he?
  • Jake and Amy are wonderful people, aren’t they?
  • Walter and Jesse aren’t related, are they?

Als de hoofdzin het werkwoord to do of een ander werkwoord dan to be bevat, gebruiken we een vorm van to do in de tag question.

We gebruiken dan de volgende vormen:

  • Do I? (+) – Don’t I? (-)
  • Do you? (+) – Don’t you? (-)
  • Does he / does she / does it? (+) – Doesn’t he / doesn’t she / doesn’t it? (-)
  • Do we? (+) – Don’t we? (-)
  • Do they? (+) – Don’t they? (-)
