A relaxing afternoon

Once upon a time there was Jack. 

Jack was walking around in the park while he got a ball.
The lights were turning on as well because it was almost evening. So, Jack was trying to hike as fast as he could to get home on time. He was smiling a lot and could not stop enjoying the peaceful park which was empty the whole day.  Luckily, his house was at the end of the green park.

How does one make a past continuous?

Something was going on in the past-> then something else happened in the past

Example: Caronline was skiing when she broke her leg

Something was going on for a while in the past 

She was doing homework for hours yesterday evening 

How does one make a past continuous?

Was/were + verb+ing 

• I was teaching when someone named the plant
• He was calling his grandpa when I fell down the 

stairs

• They were cleaning the classroom when the

lights went off

PAST SIMPLE

PAST CONTINUOUS 

• Verb + ED

• Focused on completion of an action in the past

• Was/Were + verb + ing

• Focused on the duration or ongoing nature of an action.
