Lets look at our first case study. 

Step 1 - Practice analysing your first case study

Amy is 4 years old. She was taken in to foster care when she was six months old because social workers were concerned about her health and well being. Her mother was unable to care for or bond with her due to an alcohol addiction. After her mother started a rehabilitation programme, Amy was briefly placed with her, but her mother began drinking again. The social workers were concerned and she was placed in care once more but with a new foster carer. After a few months the foster carer was taken seriously ill and the placement ended. Amy has since been in five other short - term placements. At school, her teachers find her behaviour challenging. She has lower levels of language than the other children and finds it hard to share and care for others.

Michael Rutter (1933 - 2021)

Rutter was heavily influenced by the work of John Bowlby, he used Bowlby's theory as the foundations of his own research.

He stated that Bowlby did not recognise the different between the following:

1. A baby who had never formed an attachment with a mother. (Privation)

2. A baby who had formed an attachment with the mother but then experienced separation. (Deprivation).

Rutter's work developed some very key and valid points applicable to every day practice.

Therefore creating the name of his theory Privation vs Deprivation.

Rutter conducted his research around both categories of children, he considered children with privation and deprivation.

His theory concluded:

Children who had never formed an attachment were far worse than those who did form an attachment but were separated.

Rutter further notices that there was a clear link between attachment, cognitive development and language development.

He claimed attachment has a role in supporting healthy cognition and language development.
