Can > Could

Bij de indirecte rede verandert 'can' naar 'could'.

Let op: Als er 'could' al in de zin staat (directe rede) verandert het woord niet meer!

Voorbeeld:

I can sing. > Joost said he could sing.

She could sing. > She said she could sing.

Joost: "I can speak English."

Will > Would

Bij de indirecte rede verandert 'will' naar 'would'.

Let op: Als er 'would' al in de zin staat (directe rede) verandert het woord niet meer!

Voorbeeld:

I will clean my room. > Joost said he would clean his room.

I would help you. > She said she would help me.

We kennen in het Nederlands drie lidwoorden: de, het, een.

In het Engels zijn er twee lidwoorden: the, a.

Vandaag gaan we meer leren over het gebruik van the, dit wordt in het Nederlands vertaald met de of het.

Let op: In het Engels wordt niet altijd een lidwoord gebruikt!

We use THE...

...because there is only one:

The Pope is visiting Russia.

The moon is very bright tonight.

...with a superlative adjective:

He is the tallest boy in the class.

It is the oldest building in the town.

We use THE...

...because there is only one in that context:

We live in a small house next to the church. (= the church in our village)

Dad, can I borrow the car? (= the car that belongs to our family)

...to say something about all the things referred to by a noun:

The wolf is not a dangerous animal. (= Wolves are not dangerous)

The kangaroo is found only in Australia. (= Kangaroos are found only in Australia.)

We use THE...

... to talk about musical instruments:

Joe plays the piano really well.

She is learning the guitar.

...to refer to a system or service:

How long does it take on the train?

I heard it on the radio.

You should tell the police.

We use THE...

...with countries whose names include words like kingdom, states or republic:

the United Kingdom, the United States, the Republic of Ireland

... countries which have plural nouns as their names:

the Netherlands, the Philippines

...geographical features, such as mountain ranges, groups of islands, rivers, seas, oceans and canals:

the Himalayas, the Amazon, the Atlantic Ocean

We use THE...

...with organisations:

the United Nations, the Rabobank

...with families:

the Jacksons, the Smiths

...with hotels, pubs, restaurants:

the Hilton, the King's Head

LIKE / AS

Like en as worden gebruikt om een vergelijking te maken tussen twee mensen of dingen. 

LIKE

Like wordt gebruikt om iets te zeggen over zelfstandig naamwoorden en persoonlijke voornaamwoorden.

Dit betekent dat je like gebruikt om iets te zeggen over:

- Hoe een persoon of ding iets doet.

- Hoe een persoon of ding eruit ziet.

Like

- It fits like a glove. (hoe iets gedaan wordt)

- She is acting like a queen. (hoe iets gedaan wordt)

- It smells like honey

- She behaves just like her!

As

As gebruik je voor bijzinnen en in combinatie met voorzetsels.

Dit betekent dat je as gebruikt om iets te zeggen over:

- Waarvoor iets gebruikt wordt.

- Het beroep dat iemand beoefent.

- De tijd waarin iets gebeurt.

AS

- As in the past year, I am going to France. (voorzetsel: in)

- I work as a teacher at an elementary school. (beroep: teacher)

- As in 2021, 2022 has been affected by Covid-19.

Reciprocal pronouns

Reciprocal pronouns worden gebruikt om een wederzijdse relatie uit te drukken. Je vertaalt het met "elkaar". 

Het verwijst naar het onderwerp van de zin.

They are talking to each other.

We will always love one another.

Sarah and Marvin always help each other.

Uitzonderingen

Reflexive pronouns gebruik je niet na werkwoorden als wash, dress en shave, tenzij je nadruk wilt leggen op wie het doet.

Reciprocal pronouns gebruik je niet na werkwoorden als hug, marry en kiss.

One of Ones gebruik je... 

als je niet nog een keer een zelfstandig naamwoord wilt herhalen in de zin

Ones        meervoud

Het hangt er van af of het zelfstandig naamwoord daarvoor in het enkelvoud of meervoud staat.

Let goed op bij het lezen van de zin!

Do you like cookies? These ones are delicious.

MAAR het kan ook zo zijn dat het zelfstandig naamwoord in het meervoud staat, maar je er maar één van deze groep bedoelt. Lees dus altijd goed de hele zin door!

Na deze woorden kun je one/ones gebruiken:

1. een bijvoeglijk naamwoord

                 There are big problems and small ones.

2. which

                I have to read a book. Which one should I pick? 

3. this/ that/ these / those

              Do you like thrillers? This one is a must-read.

4. als zelfstandig naamwoord

              Muffins? I like the ones with chocolate best.
