HAVE TO, MUST & SHOULD
De Engelse taal kent een aantal werkwoorden die we kunnen gebruiken voor situaties waarin we in het Nederlands “(zou) moeten” gebruiken.

  • Have / has to + hele werkwoord
  • Must + hele werkwoord
  • Should + hele werkwoord

Slide 2 - Slide

HAVE TO, MUST & SHOULD
  • Have / has to + hele werkwoord
  • Must + hele werkwoord
  • Should + hele werkwoord

HAVE TO, MUST & SHOULD
1. Wanneer iets (niet) moet of noodzakelijk is

Als we willen zeggen dat iets moet of noodzakelijk is, gebruiken we have / has to of must.

Wanneer iets juist niet moet, gebruiken we don’t / doesn’t have to of must not / mustn’t

Bij vraagzinnen gebruiken we do / does … have to of must …

HAVE TO, MUST & SHOULD
Wat is het verschil?
Have to is informeel, must is formeler en dwingender. We gebruiken must vooral bij wetten, regels en bevelen – dus als iets écht belangrijk is.

  • You have to come. You are obliged to come (I require that you come)
  • You must come. You are obliged to come. (There's a rule requiring you to come)
  • You don’t have to worry about your exams, I’m sure you’ll do great. (This is my personal opinion)
  • Do I have to wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (What do you think?)
  • Must I wear this tie? Am I obliged to wear this tie? (Is there a rule about ties?)

2. Wanneer iets niet anders kan

Als we willen zeggen dat iets logisch is / niet anders kan, gebruiken we must.

  • You must be exhausted after that long swim.
  • That dog must be really old, because its muzzle is grey.

3. Advies
Wanneer we iemand advies geven of zeggen dat iets (eigenlijk) zou moeten, gebruiken we should / shouldn’t.

  • We should ask Billy if he wants to come.
  • You should apply for the singing competition, you’ll do great!
  • You should drink more water.
  • They shouldn’t be talking this loudly in a movie theater, everyone is bothered by them.
