Past Simple
- Used to talk about things that finished in the past and are over now.
- Used to talk about things that were true in the past.
- Used to talk about things that happened repeatedly in the past.

Past Continuous
Used to talk about something that was in progress in the past:
- To talk about an action that was in progress in the past when another action interrupted it
- To talk about an action in the past that started before and probably continued after a certain time in the past
- To talk about two things that were in progress in the past at the same time.
