Modals you already know
 can, could, should, have to/has to, must
(be able to)

Hulpwerkwoorden
2) Modals zijn hulpwerkwoorden:
- Na een modal volgt altijd een tweede werkwoord in de stam vorm
- ze veranderen niet (behalve ‘have to'): have to/has to
Ex: He can swim. (NIET CANS)
        She should swim. (NIET SHOULDS)
but: She has to swim.

Vergelijk de zinnen
1) Een modal verandert de betekenis van een  werkwoord.
You swim.
You can swim.
You could swim.
You have to/must swim.
You should swim.

can-could
  • can= possibility (mogelijk) - ability (iets kunnen) - permission (toestemming)
                     I can visit her tomorrow. /  I can ride a bike. / Can I borrow your pen?
  • could=ability in the past (iets kon in het verleden) - permission (toestemming) 
                       I could ride a bike when I was 4./Could I borrow your pen?
      Could voor toestemming is beleefder dan can.

should-have/has to-must
1. je gebruikt should om advies te geven  (advice) =zou moeten 
You should be quiet! They should eat more veggies.
2. je gebruikt have/has to, must om aan te geven dat iets moet, is verplicht (obligation)
You have to do your homework! She has to do her homework.
They must do the dishes.

New modals
- ought to: You ought to read this book.
ought to gebruik je om te praten over wat ideaal zou zijn (bijna hetzelfde als should)
- may/might: I may/might move back to Italy next year.
                            May/Might I borrow your pen?
may/might gebruik je als iets niet zeker is en om toestemming te vragen (formeler dan can en could)

Ontkenning van modals
Om een ontkenning te maken met modals gebruik je not of n't na de modal.
You should not smoke! I cannot swim. You must not smoke in an airplane.
Uitzonderingen:
She ought not to ignore the rules.
She doesn't have to go to school.
