Lesson goals

  • Be able to understand the text and identify the conflict in a short story
  • Be able to write sentences expressing wants of something that you do not have (i.e., wish + past simple)

What is a conflict?

  • Discuss with your neighbour your thoughts on what the conflict might be?
  • Share examples of conflicts that you had (make sure not to share sensitive information!)

What is a conflict?

  •  Conflict means a struggle between two opposing forces, e.g., An evil wizard finds it difficult to make friends; A happy marriage ends up in a bitter divorce.

  • Share the character roles within your group
  • Enact the story in your groups

  • While reading, note what was the main conflict in the story? What was the problem that the main character was facing? Be ready to discuss it with the class.

  • Now: Get the show on the road and break a leg everybody!

  • How do you know?
  • Look at the text and underline all sentences or phrases where you can see the word "want" said by the American wife. How many did you count? 
  • What do you think of the American wife? Is she a nice lady?
  • What could help her to get what she wants?
