Origins of Saint Valentine's Day
Pagan
Lupercalia was an ancient, possibly pre-Roman pastoral annual festival, observed in the city of Rome between 13–15 February to avert evil spirits and purify the city, releasing health and fertility. Also called dies Februatus.

Christian
St. Valentine, (died 3rd century, Rome; feast day February 14), name of one or two legendary Christian martyrs
  • Legend I: St. Valentine - a  Roman priest and physician martyred during the persecution of Christians by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus about 270. 
  • Legend II: The bishop of Terni, Italy, who was martyred in Rome.

Legends  
  • St. Valentine signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and healed from blindness. He defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war.

Used in the same way as the Present Perfect, but  emphasizes duration 

( i.e. I have been waiting for hours and he still hasn't showed up!)

  • Think of a good movie you watched in the cinema.

  • Write a movie review and use as many words from SB Unit 3 as possible. 

  • Comment about the setting, producer, main characters, music etc. 

  • Use lots of descriptions (moving, predictable, entertaining etc.)

  • One syllable -> adjective/ adj. + er / adj. + est (tall/taller/tallest)
  • One or two syllables, einding in -y -> funny / funnier / funniest
  • Two or more syllables -> adjective/more + adj. / most + adj.
  • Irregular adjectives!  good/better/best - bad/worse/worst - far/further/furthest
