Ukraine-Russia conflict 2022

Who's who?

On February 24, the Russian army invaded Ukraine.

A lot of countries and organisations have responded to news of this invasion. 

Sanctions were announced by world leaders.  

These is a lot of fake news going around from both the Russian and the Ukranian side. 

Vladimir Putin

• President of Russia
• Doesn't think Ukraine should be accepted to NATO
• Doesn't acknowledge Ukranian government, wants to rid the country of all "nazis"

Voldomir Zelenski

• President of Ukraine
• Since 2014 at war with rebel parts of Ukraine: Donetsk and Lugansk
• 2014: Krim was annexed
• Country had a democratically elected government.
• Wants to join EU and NATO 

Krim 2014

Rusland annexeerde in 2014 de Krim om de route via de Zwarte Zee naar de Middellandse Zee zeker te stellen.

Vanuit de haven van Sebastopol wordt een groep oorlogsschepen bestuurd. 

De Krimcrisis is de naam voor een grote crisis die in 2014 begon op de Krim. Na de Euromaidan (grote protesten) in Oekraïne werd president Viktor Janoekovitsj daar verjaagd. Veel inwoners van de Krim waren het hier niet mee eens, aangezien veel mensen daar oorspronkelijk Russisch waren en Janoekovitsj goede banden had met Rusland. Rusland wilde aansluiting van de Krim bij Rusland en veel inwoners van de Krim waren het daar mee eens. Rusland deed een inval in de Krim en de Russische militairen hadden de Krim in handen.

De VS en het VK hebben hier ook mee te maken. Dat komt omdat ze met de Russen hadden afgesproken dat die in ruil voor slopen van de kernwapens van Oekraïne niet Oekraïne zouden aanvallen. Vladimir Poetin zei dat hij zich hier niet aan hoefde te houden omdat hij de opstand in Oekraïne ongrondwettig vond.

• Supplies Ukraine with weapons
• Most governing parties are in favour of sancions agains Russia
• Dependent of Russian gas supply. Concern about rising prices of gas 

Olaf Scholz

• Chancellor of Germany
• Stopped oil-pipeline     Nordstream 2
• Will invest in army and supply weapons to Ukraine
• Decision of investing in army is change of foreign policy

EU

• 27 member states 
•  Condemns Russian invasion and supplies arms to Ukraine
• Russian airplanes are no longer alllowed to cross over EU
• Russian assets are frozen throughout the EU

NATO

• Have sent troops to member-states in Eastern Europe. 
• Joint Task Air Force (flitsmacht) is used for first time
• Artcle 4 ensures consultation when a NATO member is threatened.
• Article 5: attack on NATO-member = attack on all members.

Gazprom

• Owned by Russia
• Biggest global natural gas producer  
• Sponsors footballclubs and museums
• A lot of Dutch city councils have contracts with this company

Baltic States

• Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania 
• Close to Russia, lot of Russian inhabitants
• Former Soviet Republics
• Feel threatened. Lithuania want NATO to push article 4 (ensures consultation when member is threatened)

China

• Wants to stay neutral in this conflict
• Supports Russia in its struggle against expanding NATO
• Dictatorship 

SWIFT

• International system of banking, created to enable international payments
• Not being able to use this system is considered a harsh economical sanction
• In the past, Iran was cut off from SWIFT
