learning goals
  • What is pregnancy and which phases are there?
  • What is implantation and why is this process needed for a healthy embryo to form?
  • What structures are there to nourish and support the developing foetus?

Do you know when the sex of the baby will be determined?

Talking point 4.2

Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy by removing the embryo or fetus before it can survive outside the uterus. This procedure is legal in The Netherlands up to 24 weeks in pregnancy. In many countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the middle East abortion is still illegal. Discuss with another student how you feel about this.

5.6 pregnancy

Slide 5 - Slide

Pregnancy
  • Pregnancy is the period of development from zygote to birth.
  • Pregnancy takes place in the female reproductive system
Zygote = fertilized egg

Slide 6 - Slide

When?
7 days after fertilization there is the implantation of the embryo in the uterus lining. The next 9 months the zygote will develop into a baby.

Fertilization happens when a sperm cell meets an egg

Slide 7 - Slide

In which phase of the menstrual cycle can an egg be fertilized?
A
Phase 1 (day 1-7)
B
Phase 2 (day 7-13)
C
Phase 3 (day 13-28)

Slide 8 - Quiz

On which day in the menstrual cycle is the implantation of the fertilized egg?
A
Between day 5-10
B
Between day 10-15
C
Between 15-20
D
Between 20-25

Slide 9 - Quiz

The first phase: zygote
  • A fertilized egg is also called a zygote
  • The zygote will start dividing into a tiny hollow clump of cells inside the oviduct (= cleavage).
  • The dividing zygote is called a embryo.

Slide 10 - Slide

zygote -> morula-> blastocyst -> embryo

Slide 11 - Slide

Slide 12 - Video

What is cleavage?
(choose the best answer)
A
cell divisions during which the zygote grows into a tiny hollow ball of cells
B
cell divisions before fertilization
C
cell division during which the embryo grows into the first foetal stage
D
cell divisions during which the zygote grows into an foetus

Slide 13 - Quiz

The second phase: embryo
  • When an embryo reaches the uterus, it implants itself into the uterus lining.
  • The uterus lining develops into a placenta, which is able to provide the nutrients and oxygen through the umbilical cord to the embryo. Through the umbilical cord the embryo get rid of waste.
So the umbilical cord is the connection between the mother and the child. Different substances can pass from mother to child through the umbilical cord, like alcohol, drugs and even some virusses.

Slide 14 - Slide

Membranes
During the 3th week of pregnancy two thin membranes start to grow around the embryo: chorion and amnion

Slide 15 - Slide

Membranes
Together the amnion and the chlorion form the amniotic sac. The amniotic sac is filled with amniotic fluid.

Slide 16 - Slide

Membranes
In the amniotic fluid the embryo floats.

Slide 17 - Slide

Explain how the embryo (and foetus) is protected.
Use the words: 'amnion', 'chorion', 'amniotic sac' and 'amniotic fluid'

Slide 18 - Open question

The third phase: foetus
  • After 2 months is the embryo is called a foetus.
  • The next 7 months the foetus will develop further into a fully grown baby.
So the umbilical cord is the connection between the mother and the child. Different substances can pass from mother to child through the umbilical cord, like alcohol, drugs and even some virusses.
