The function of a town, and the reason for its existence, can often be deduced from:
1. Its location

- Being located near the sea also suggests tourism and recreation.
- Situated around bridges, rivers, or canals signifies trading and transport hubs.
- SItuated close to natural resources like iron and coal points to industrial activities such as factories and mining.
